Marks in legal studies, music to be considered for admission to DU colleges

Delhi University is likely to consider Legal Studies and Music as academic subjects for admissions to undergraduate humanities courses this year.

This means that applicants, who have studied these subjects in Class 12, will now be able to include their marks in the aggregate of best four.

“Legal Studies will be considered as elective subject for admissions to humanities courses. There are many students who choose the subject in Class 12,” said AK Bhagi, member of the admission committee.

Admission process for around 54,000 undergraduate seats in DU colleges will start from May 24. Admission to DU colleges is based on the aggregate of highest marks secured in any three academic subjects and a language. This aggregate should be equal or higher than the cut-off announced by a college for any course. For science courses, however, best marks in three science subjects are considered.

The admission committee has also recommended that Music be considered as elective subject for admission to BA (Program) and music courses.

“For admissions to other streams the usual deduction of 10 marks or 2.5 % will be done from the marks obtained in these subjects,” said Bhagi.

A 24-member admission committee, including senior DU officials, deans and academic council members, has recommended a set of rules for admissions. The recommendations have been sent to the vice-chancellor for final approval.

Last year DU had allowed legal studies to be considered as academic subject only for admission to Political Science after cut-offs were announced.
