Sports Quota admissions to focus on playing positions

For students seeking admission through sports quota, this is some news. The sports quota criteria at Delhi University is set to undergo changes. Now, colleges will hold trials for specific positions that the team is looking to fill. “If a college needs a wicket keeper for the cricket team, or a center forward for the football team, or a striker for hockey, the selection will revolve around these positions,” a member of the admissions committee said.

5% of the seats in all colleges are reserved under sports and extra-curricular category. The 2016 admission season is all set to begin from May 25, with the first cut-off list expected on June 22.

As many as 3000 students seek admission through sports quota at Delhi University every year. For admission through sports quota, a college-level application has to be filled by the students. After this, three fitness tests are conducted by Delhi University for admission through sports quota.

The University seeks to ensure a certain measure of transperancy in admissions through sports quota, by holding trials only for those positions that the college team is looking to fill. Colleges have been asked to submit their data by the end of this month, and confusion will be eliminated from the entire process, making it easier and less time-consuming, according to an official. Students will now be required to apply to specific colleges keeping in mind the requirement of each college team, thereby streamlining the process.

Applicants can find out what positions are available at different colleges. This can help them save time and allow them to apply wisely. But this is a stark shift from Delhi University’s previous approach when it comes to admission through sports quota. Earlier, DU would take into account the overall abilities of each student, rather than focus on playing positions.
