Delhi University step a relief for science students

The Delhi University, from this academic session, is planning to scrap the ten per cent marks deduction policy from the science courses for DU aspirants from state boards.

As per university guidelines which was valid till last year, students with science subjects from other boards that have allotted 60 marks for theory and 40 marks for practical would lose out on 10 marks when they applied in DU.

“All subjects must have at least 70 per cent component of theory in the qualifying examination for the purpose of being treated as an academic/elective subject,” the 2015 university guidelines stated.

However, students from Haryana, Rajasthan, UP boards and others have marks division of 60 for theory and 40 for practical for both Physics and Chemistry, whereas CBSE has 70-30 division. So a student applying to a science course from these boards used to lose 10 marks from each subject. But now the students who wish to apply in DU for higher studies from these states would now get benefit under this new system.

A.K. Baghi, member of admission committee, said, “We are planning to scarp this criteria and instead calculate the marks on pro-rata basis. The university has reconsidered its guidelines on the same and will be changing it from this admission season.”

Nikhil Singh, one of the DU aspirants said, “This is such a relief. Deduction of 10 per cent marks is a huge penalty for most students.”
